The first ultrasound of the pregnancy is performed around week 5 of gestation for confirmation. At this time it is possible to visualize the gestational sac surrounding the embryo, but it will not be possible to observe the embryo itself.
For this reason, it is sometimes advisable to wait until the 6th-7th week of pregnancy for this first ultrasound since the embryo should be visible at this time and even its heartbeat can be heard. If at this point, the gestational sac is empty, it could be an anembryonic pregnancy.
