How is follicular puncture performed?

Follicular puncture is a simple and brief procedure performed in in vitro fertilisation treatments to obtain eggs after ovarian stimulation and the administration, 30-34 hours before, of an injection of hCG hormone.

It is usually performed by ultrasound-guided vaginal puncture, in which the follicular fluid is aspirated to obtain the eggs contained in the ovarian follicles. The patient will not feel pain, as it is performed under anaesthesia.

The aspirated follicular fluid is quickly taken to the laboratory, where it is examined to locate the eggs, which will be placed on a plate with a suitable culture medium.
