Sperm morphology is one of the parameters studied in the spermiogram. This parameter reports the percentage of spermatozoa that have a shape considered normal.
For the evaluation of sperm morphology, a small sample of the total ejaculate is prepared for microscopic evaluation. Then, each spermatozoon (up to a total of 200) is observed individually for each of its parts: head, midpiece and tail. A spermatozoon is considered morphologically normal if none of its parts shows any abnormality.
Thus, after completing the morphological analysis under the microscope, the percentage of normal and abnormal spermatozoa in the semen sample can be calculated.
