Spermatozoa need to have progressive motility to reach their ultimate goal: fertilizing the egg cell. During their journey toward the Fallopian tubes, where the egg is located, they must overcome a series of barriers and swim rapidly toward the oocyte, as only the fastest will be able to fertilize it.
As such, progressive motility and speed are extremely important aspects of the sperm in order to achieve pregnancy naturally.
