How is azoospermia defined?

Azoospermia is defined as the total absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculated semen. It is a seminal alteration that causes male infertility due to sperm factor. If there are no sperm in the ejaculate, natural pregnancy is not possible. For this reason, men with azoospermia will have to resort to assisted reproduction techniques. In some cases, it is possible to obtain sperm directly from the testicle and they are used in IVF-ICSI.

In other cases, however, it is not possible to retrieve sperm from the testicles and it will be necessary to use a donor sperm sample for assisted reproductive techniques.
