Most cases of cervical cancer are associated with infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV). However, this infection is not the only reason or the only risk factor for this disease.
For example, having multiple sexual partners, smoking, family history, and use of birth control pills also increase the likelihood of cervical cancer. Nonetheless, these are risk factors, which means that the disease will not always develop.
