As part of the body's natural process of adapting to pregnancy, changes occur in the cervix. These cervical changes are an indication that the body is responding to hormones and preparing for the development of pregnancy and childbirth.
One of the cervical changes that occur in labour is that the openings of the cervix are closed if it is the first pregnancy (primiparous). In contrast, these openings are slightly open if it is not the woman's first pregnancy.
