The question of whether sexual intercourse is possible during in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment is a common one. Although some studies suggest that it may be beneficial, there are some drawbacks, such as the following:
- Uterine contractions from female orgasm.
- Painful intercourse.
- Risk of complications such as ovarian torsion.
- Possibility of infection.
- Multiple pregnancy.
- Guilt if the result of the cycle is negative.
Therefore, the general recommendation is to avoid sexual intercourse from before the ovarian puncture until one week after the embryo transfer (or until the pregnancy test).
