After delivery, neonates born to mothers who smoke may experience various complications due to exposure to toxic substances in tobacco throughout pregnancy. Among the main consequences of smoking during pregnancy are the following:
- Congenital malformations such as, for example, cleft lip or cleft palate.
- Neonatal abstinence syndrome that manifests itself with stress, irritability, anxiety, etc.
- Respiratory problems and increased susceptibility to infections.
- Sudden infant death syndrome.
