Endometrial growth occurs in two phases during a woman's menstrual cycle:
- Proliferative phase
- the endometrial cells divide and blood vessels and endometrial glands are formed.
- Secretory phase
- the glands grow in size and begin to secrete mucus and glycoproteins to promote implantation.
On day 28 of the menstrual cycle, if neither embryo implantation nor pregnancy has occurred, the endometrium is shed and begins to be eliminated with the descent of menstruation.
