Is there a treatment for teratozoospermia?

By Elisa Pérez Larrea M.D., M.Sc. (gynecologist).
Last Update: 01/17/2025

There are a number of medical recommendations to improve teratozoospermia. Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help improve sperm quality. Specifically, foods high in antioxidants and essential amino acids such as L-carnitine, as well as oily fish, rich in omega-3 acids, are nutrients that can benefit men with this problem. These nutrients can also be taken in the form of vitamin supplements.

It is important to note that if teratozoospermia has a genetic or congenital cause, it will be more difficult to achieve improvements in semen parameters.

If pregnancy does not occur despite these changes, it is advisable to resort to assisted reproduction treatment, which can vary between artificial insemination, IVF or ICSI depending on the severity of the semen alterations and the characteristics of the couple.
