Genital herpes can be caused by either herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Most commonly, genital herpes is caused by HSV-2 and HSV-1 causes cold sores or oral herpes.
However, HSV-1 can be transmitted from the oral area to the genital area during oral sex, so HSV-1 can cause genital herpes.
Thus, genital herpes can be transmitted with vaginal, anal or oral sex.
