Although genital herpes cannot be cured, there are antiviral drugs that can reduce symptoms and shorten their duration. These include acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir.
However, if outbreaks occur frequently, there is the possibility of taking daily antiviral treatment to try to reduce the occurrence of new outbreaks. Also, if taken daily, it may reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to a sexual partner.
Ideally, a specialist should be consulted so that he or she can prescribe the most appropriate form of administration of antivirals according to the particular case.
