FSH is a gonadotropic hormone released by the pituitary gland that exerts its effect on both male and female gonads.
In the female, FSH will stimulate FSH-dependent growth of ovarian follicles as well as estrogen production from androgens by its action on granulosa cells.
In the male, FSH plays an important role in the regulation of spermatogenesis (sperm formation) through its action on the Sertoli cells.
