The hormone hCG (chorionic gonadotropin) is secreted by the embryo once implantation has occurred. In the first weeks of gestation, it is normal for the values of this hormone to double every 48-72 hours until reaching a peak at 12 weeks of pregnancy. Thereafter, beta hCG levels will begin to decrease progressively.
For this reason, if hCG hormone levels are low, it is very important to repeat the assessment again at 48-72 hours. If the hCG levels do not double or are not as expected, it may indicate that the evolution of the pregnancy is compromised.
