The cause of HELLP syndrome is not currently known. However, there are factors that have been linked to an increased risk of developing HELLP syndrome, such as the following:
- Pre-eclampsia.
- Previous pregnancy with HELLP syndrome.
- Multiparous.
- Caucasian ethnicity.
- Pregnancy in young women.
Family history or coagulation disorders should not be forgotten as they are also risk factors for HELLP syndrome.
