The total weight gain of a pregnant woman is distributed between the baby and other structures and tissues. Approximately, the contribution of each of these to the pregnant woman's weight gain is:
- Baby
- 3.5 kilos.
- Placenta
- 700 g.
- Uterus
- 1 kilo.
- Amniotic fluid
- 800 g.
- Breast
- 400 g.
- Blood
- 1.5 kilos
- Fat deposits
- 3.5 kilos.
- Extravascular fluid
- 1.5 kilos.
This may also explain why only part of the weight gained during pregnancy is lost at delivery.
