The contraceptive implant known as Implanon has been challenged in UK.

The British Government has seen the necessity to send a reassuring message to all women using the contraceptive implant known as Implanon due to recent publications reporting a significant number of unwanted pregnancies among women using this method of birth control.

It is considered as an excellent and usually extremely reliable method of birth control, endorsed by many scientific studies. Thus, failure may be due to an incorrect insertion of the implant. The British Government and manufacturers MSD said "no contraceptive is 100% effective". However, results to date show less than one case of pregnancy every 1,000 women using Implanon.

In Spain, this method is authorized since year 2000 but only 1% of population of childbearing age uses it. Anyway, the Spanish Health Ministry has pointed out that Implanon failure may be due to its misuse. However, these cases will be evaluated later to shed light on what happened.
