In the case of artificial insemination (AI), the multiple pregnancy rate may be increased due to the ovarian stimulation performed. The aim of this stimulation is the development of a maximum of two ovarian follicles to improve the chance of fertilization of an egg.
However, it may happen that the two follicles give rise to one mature egg, that both eggs are fertilized and that both embryos implant. This is how AI increases the multiple pregnancy rate.
Therefore, if more follicles develop than expected, artificial insemination should be cancelled because of the increased risk of multiple pregnancy.
