Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can occur as a complication of treatment used for ovarian stimulation in assisted reproduction. It is an excessive response of the ovaries to hormonal medication administered for the production of multiple follicles.
However, there are certain factors that can indicate a higher risk of the patient developing OHSS after ovarian stimulation. These risk factors for OHSS are:
- Young age.
- Low BMI.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
- Elevated antral follicle count.
- Previous OHSS.
- Elevated estradiol levels.
In this way, identifying patients who have a higher risk of suffering from OHSS will allow the specialist to adapt the stimulation protocol and carry out an exhaustive control during the stimulation of these women.
