Decrease in ovarian reserve and increase in FSH.

The ovarian reserve decreases with increasing age of the woman, until it is exhausted at menopause. In addition, this means that the ovary produces less inhibitory hormones, which results in elevated basal FSH levels.

Thus, basal FSH levels above 10 mIU/ml could be related to a low ovarian reserve. On the other hand, FSH levels above 20 mIU/ml would indicate that the woman is close to menopause.
