Metformin is a medicine that lowers glucose levels, but does not affect insulin secretion. It is therefore a hypoglycaemic and insulin-sensitising drug.
To perform its function, metformin:
- Reduces glucose production in the liver.
- Increases insulin receptors in muscle.
- Delays glucose absorption in the intestine.
