Thanks to ART people infected with HIV can become parents without the risk of transmitting the virus to their partners and children. Treatment will depend on who is HIV-positive:
- Man with HIV
- sperm washing will be necessary, as viral particles can be transmitted through semen. Then, the sperm sample will be used in an artificial insemination or IVF-ICSI so that the woman becomes pregnant.
- Woman with HIV
- in this case it will be enough to do an artificial insemination if the requirements for it are met. Since semen is introduced directly into a woman's uterus, there is no risk of contagion from unprotected sexual intercourse.
