The exact cause of premature ovarian failure or POI is unknown, although chromosomal defects, exposure to toxins or immunological alterations could be some possible reasons.
In addition, there are some factors that increase the risk of IOP. However, this does not mean that all women in these situations will develop IOP. Risk factors for IOP include:
- Age of the woman.
- Family history.
- Ovarian surgery.
