Preterm labour is when the baby is born before the 37th week of pregnancy. At this point, if the specialist sees signs of a possible preterm birth, he or she may recommend delaying the birth so that the baby can finish forming. However, this is not always possible and sometimes delivery cannot wait any longer.
In those cases where delaying labour is possible, the woman is usually advised to rest or may even need to be given intravenous fluids or glucocorticoids.
