Salpingitis occurs after a bacterial infection, generally of the chlamydial type. If only one tube is affected, as in the case of the image, we speak of unilateral salpingitis. If both tubes are affected, it is bilateral salpingitis.
Salpingitis causes inflammation and this can lead to sterility and ectopic pregnancy.
