Teratozoospermia is an alteration in sperm morphology. If a seminal sample has more than 96% amorphous spermatozoa, it will be diagnosed as teratozoospermia based on the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.
However, there is another, stricter classification for the diagnosis of teratozoospermia. These are the strict Kruger criteria. According to this classification, a distinction can be made between mild, moderate and severe teratozoospermia.
A semen sample is said to have moderate teratozoospermia when it contains between 5-9% normal spermatozoa. In these cases, it is best to resort to in vitro fertilization (IVF) with sperm microinjection to achieve pregnancy.
