Although less well known than in men, testosterone also has important functions in women. For this reason, low testosterone levels can cause certain symptoms in both sexes.
In women, the main causes that can lead to a testosterone deficiency are:
- Aging.
- Bilateral oophorectomy.
- Chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
- Alterations in the adrenal glands.
- Premature ovarian failure (POI).
- HIV infection.
In addition, stressful situations can also lead to an impairment of androgen production in the adrenal glands.
