The umbilical cord is the structure that connects the placenta to the baby during pregnancy. It has a tubular, helical shape and is a flexible structure that usually measures about 50-65 cm (although the length can be very variable).
The main function of the umbilical cord is to supply oxygen and nutrients to the baby, but also to remove the waste substances produced. This is done by the umbilical vein and the two umbilical arteries, which are surrounded and protected by Wharton's jelly.
