What is the vasa previa?

Vasa previa is a condition in the umbilical cord in which blood vessels escape from the umbilical cord and travel through the membranes surrounding the baby, passing over the cervix or very close to it. There is therefore a risk that, when the water breaks, these blood vessels will rupture and haemorrhage may occur, which can even lead to the death of the baby.

For this reason, when this condition is diagnosed, the woman will have frequent check-ups. In this way, the foetal heart rate will be monitored. It is even possible that the woman will be hospitalised in the final stages of pregnancy for more exhaustive monitoring.
