Urinary tract infections are infections of the urinary tract caused by the presence of micro-organisms. The most common aetiological agent is the bacterium Escherichia coli, although they can also be caused by viruses, fungi or parasites.
Invasion can occur via the lower end of the urinary tract or via the bloodstream, directly affecting the kidneys.
