When a woman's period is permanently irregular, it is due to some alteration in the menstrual cycle. In these cases a thorough gynecological examination is recommended.
Sometimes, irregular periods have a primary cause such as delayed puberty or absence of ovaries. However, on other occasions, menstrual irregularities are due to ovarian cancer, early menopause or pituitary alterations.
